*puts on geek hat* SF very simplistically divides into "hard SF", which focuses on space travel and tech, artificial intelligence and computers (think Star Trek, Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, William Gibson) and "soft SF", which looks more at futuristic societies, utopias and dystopias ("1984", "Never Let Me Go", Orson Scott Card). The Davids aren't particularly tech geeks, and despite my enduring love for ST and Charlie Stross, neither am I, so I made the latter type of story. I'm glad you liked!
