yes, skating DDD: there's a lot of pressure for male skaters to act masculine and female skaters to act feminine in the stereotypical sense both on the ice and off the ice, which means that those who don't conform have to change themselves or deal with the consequences. like johnny weir, who is often treated by his federation and media as a ~flamboyant~ freakshow embarrassment instead of the elite-level athlete that he is partially because he gets gender-bendy with his performances and doesn't even bother to pass for 100% heterosexual. also because he is sometimes an IRL troll and an asshole with no brain to mouth filter sigh
(caveat: johnny weir currently doesn't discuss his sexuality, whatever it is, to the press, which is a position i understand.)

as you said, archie's still young and sheltered, and if there's one thing i've learned over the years, people i like and love will continue to fail at this sort of thing, and the best thing to do is to try to help them not fail in the future.
