Quickdrabbles Fic 36: Focused on what I could attract...

You made a pact, you dropped the act, you focused on what you could attract...

Meh, I'm feeling somewhat written out - I am working on a wedding story (a separate story
from the one on which I'm collaborating with the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] frackin_sweet), and it's not going too well - and I want to start on this cracky R possibly-canon, possibly-AU bordello fic, and my guitars-by-gaslight AUbigbang, but I have just no impetus.

And I'm in Court this afternoon, WOE.

As a way of importuning the Muses, I thought I might try the drabbular method recently employed by [livejournal.com profile] timeisgone, [livejournal.com profile] kissesblow, [livejournal.com profile] orochi_kitty and [livejournal.com profile] otherbella.

Hundred word drabbles, snatches of story, any Cook, Anthemic, AIS7 pairing; crossovers with X-Men, BtVS/AtS, Discworld, Holmes, The Law. I think I have a tiny legalesque Cook/Ryan Seacrest somewhere! I'll even write you self-insert (of you). Leave me a prompt (word, song, whatever) and rating. Will turn around fast, so as to importune quickly XD

Gorgeous pic from the insanely talented [livejournal.com profile] ciudad, used with permission.

Eagle's Wings [PG-13]

Reubens' Ganymede, as referenced in the drabble.

This is the Professor's favorite chapter in Mythology 101: the various love pursuits of Zeus.

The thrill of the chase is a motif that's carried through romantic literature across cultures and centuries, from Sappho to Catallus' odes for Lesbia, from the Ramayana to Byron and Moliere.

And the pursuit of mortals, by the gods? Truth be told, it's a conceit that causes a stirring in the young Professor's breast. For what man wouldn't want to don the raiment of the god, and sweep a beloved off his or her feet?

Of course, it wouldn't do to act these pursuits out in the classroom setting: the god's taking of the priestess Semele in the rushing waters of the Aseopus; his transformation into a white bull to carry Europa away. Zeus' dalliances with Lamia, Thebe, long-limbed Aegina, pictures of love, ravishing, surrender - the Professor narrates these stories to his students, with a wry twist of his mouth, an expressive quirk of his eyebrow, small outward signs that betray the delight he takes in this subject matter.

This year there's a student in his mythology class: Archuleta. Dark hair, expressive dark eyes. A nymph's lean body. The voice of a siren. The Professor has a mind to resist, but gods traditionally don't do so well in that regard.

It's he whom the Professor looks at, when he tells the class about Zeus' seduction of the lovely Danae, coming to her in a shower of gold and overcoming her modest restraint with lustrous insistence. Archuleta drops his pen, and flushes scarlet, and the Professor feels the heat rise to his own hairline.

"I want a paper on the god's pursuit of mortals. One week," the Professor says, at the end of the class, and Archuleta leaves him without so much as a backward glance.

The Professor sees himself as a white bull, pounding over the vast plains, and has to clench his fists. This is ridiculous; it has to stop.

Six days later the Professor is grading in his office when there's a knock at his door. Archuleta's shadow stretches like temptation across his desk.

"I need some help with this paper."

"What have you chosen to write about?" the Professor enquires curiously.

"Ganymede," says Archuleta, and the Professor's mouth goes suddenly dry.

Ganymede, per Archuleta's research, was a singularly beautiful Phyrgian boy hunter whom the god chanced upon in Mount Ida, tending the horses as part of his time of youthful exile. Zeus fell in love with the boy instantly; he transformed himself into an eagle, sweeping Ganymede up with his powerful wings to Mount Olympus, there to live out his days as the god's beloved.

There's a famous sixteenth-century painting of Zeus and Ganymede by the Flemish painter Reubens, which Archuleta has helpfully attached to his paper.

The Professor's familiar with the painting: the sensuous brushstrokes depicting the bare, muscular limbs of the boy hunter, his ochre tunic blown aside to expose his rounded buttocks, the lush lines of his flanks, the possessive golden claws of the eagle clasping his flesh. White wings that cover them both, the heat of the sun above them. A thick, phallic quiver of arrows hangs astride the boy's voluptuous hips, making it impossible to mistake the painter's intent.

It's oppressively hot in the Professor's office, when Archuleta puts his paper down.

The Professor clears his throat. "It doesn't sound like you needed any help with that," he manages to say.

"Oh, it was good to clarify my thoughts," says Archuleta.

The Professor raises one eyebrow. "And what thoughts might those be, then?"

"For one, whether a god might wish to dine with a mortal, when the year's over?" Archuleta asks innocently. His eyes shine in the afternoon light.

The Professor sees wings beating fiercely, silhouetted against the sun. Sees seduction, and surrender. Can a mortal do the pursuing? Perhaps, if the god is that fortunate. Perhaps.

Oh my goodness, this is FANTASTIC. I love this idea and the scene is just so vivid. Also, what a fantastic line--Archuleta's shadow stretches like temptation across his desk.

AMAZING. Love Archie being all flustered, but totally doing the hunting here. :DDD And the mix between the myths and the reality of the situation really increased the feeling that they both probably had.

Oh well played, Archie. Well played.

Also, this sentence:
The Professor has a mind to resist, but gods traditionally don't do so well in that regard.
made me laugh out loud. The whole piece is gorgeously written, but that one sentence just stuck with me.

(Can't remember if I managed to comment on all the ficlets, sorry... I read them all, though, and loved them. :))

Thank you muchly, my dear. I love Greek myth, and had a lot of fun writing this. And I do try to do something different in fic (much like you, I think - though I"l own you are more inventive, bb; still can't get over your story about perfection!) - so I'm glad this one worked for you!
