You made a pact, you dropped the act, you focused on what you could attract...
Meh, I'm feeling somewhat written out - I am working on a wedding story (a separate story
from the one on which I'm collaborating with the fabulous
frackin_sweet), and it's not going too well - and I want to start on this cracky R possibly-canon, possibly-AU bordello fic, and my guitars-by-gaslight AUbigbang, but I have just no impetus.
And I'm in Court this afternoon, WOE.
As a way of importuning the Muses, I thought I might try the drabbular method recently employed by
timeisgone,
kissesblow,
orochi_kitty and
otherbella.
Hundred word drabbles, snatches of story, any Cook, Anthemic, AIS7 pairing; crossovers with X-Men, BtVS/AtS, Discworld, Holmes, The Law. I think I have a tiny legalesque Cook/Ryan Seacrest somewhere! I'll even write you self-insert (of you). Leave me a prompt (word, song, whatever) and rating. Will turn around fast, so as to importune quickly XD

Date: 2010-01-20 02:27 am (UTC)His Most Perfect Day [PG-13]
Date: 2010-01-21 03:51 am (UTC)Andy knows Neal's the one: the voice in his head, the words in his mouth. He knew it from the day they met, skinny boys with the same upper middle class backgrounds and the same fire in their eyes.
And every day since then: Neal's face, Neal's mouth, had been his entire world. They'd grown up together, learned to perform and play their guitars together. Learned about love and sex from each other, too; there were others, of course, but ultimately and always, there was Neal. He'd watched as Neal's virgin body acquired knowledge, sly tattoos, metal that punctuates his ears and the lips Andy loves, watched him grow into this towering blond guitar god. But his, always his.
Over the years, there were solo projects that brought them to different places, different stages, away from each other. But they spent their birthdays together. It wasn't a conscious decision, Neal wasn't particularly up for sentiment, less for discussing it; that's just the way it was.
Last year, they'd spent Neal's birthday like they spent most of December, rehearsing for Dave's large vanity project. Andy was genuinely excited to be performing backup for Dave; he'd never been on a tour of this scale before, he wanted to be at the top of his game, for Dave and to bring the lessons he'd learned back to the Midwest Kings, back to Neal.
Andy had brought Neal breakfast in bed, though: french toast and his mom's homemade cake. Neal had rolled his eyes, then rolled Andy onto his back, and they didn't make it out of bed till rehearsal - that was a good year.
This year Andy wants to do something even more special; he doesn't need a reason to want his boyfriend's day to be perfect. Neal even wrote a song about it, gave him the words to sing.
Which is why Andy's a little peeved by how Neal wants to spend the day with the other boys and girls, getting trashed at their local bar. Don't get him wrong, he loves the guys more than life itself, but Neal's spent the entire year with them, spooning up to Dave onstage, playing Monty's guitar when the big guy was still strapped to it, doing his patented headbanging over at the drums and treating Kyle to a delicious view of his abs.
He's not sulking, exactly, when Neal comes over to his barstool and wraps his arms around him.
He glares at Neal's colorful forearms. He knows how each line and nuance feels against his tongue.
"What's eatin' you?" Neal says it gently, his lips brushing Andy's ear.
Andy sighs; he knows he's being kinda petulant, but they've learned to be honest with each other, they're so busy they have no time to play games. "I just...I just wanted to make this day perfect for you, that's all. Cake and candlelight, things like that."
Neal's silent for a beat. Then he reaches down, cups Andy's hand in his.
"My most perfect day? Each day I get to be with you," he murmurs, and Andy's heart melts a little.
"Anyway," Neal adds, "There's time for cake later, and candlelight. I'll even let you pick one and do whatever you want to me," and Andy grins fiercely.
"Whoa, it's not my birthday!"
"Yeah, but this is what I want for my perfect day," Neal says, smirking, and Andy turns in his arms, taking hold of Neal's collar, reaching up to claim him. He's never going to let Neal get away with that; he'll never let him get away, period.

Offerings to Polyhymnia, [PG-13/R]: Arch is Cook's demanding Muse of Song
Date: 2010-01-20 10:11 am (UTC)His Muse rolls his eyes. You throw that, you'll never get over this block today, he says reasonably.
Cook transfers his glare to his Eames sofa. The Muse has perched on its curved back, long limbs gleaming under his classical tunic, the circlet of gold leaves slightly askew on his dark hair. "And why aren't you helping me?" Cook wants to know.
The Muse shrugs, his dark eyes bright with mischief, or some other emotion. Um, I'm not feeling too inspired, either, he murmurs. I'm kind of thinking, maybe you don't love me any more, David Cook. It's been a while since you've offered me any libations, or, you know, anything at all.
Cook gets to his feet, and walks over to the sofa. The Muse slides onto the broad body of the Eames, stretches out one graceful arm. You know, when you were a struggling artist, you'd offer to me all the time. You might not have had a lot of coin, but you'd offer wine, and companionship, and late nights. I remember you used to write into the small hours of the morning, in my arms.
The Muse leans back, his thighs part, one bare leg dangles to the floor. And you'd offer love, David. Now you're famous, I'm not sure you still feel the same about me, about us. Maybe you wanna go offer to Erato, or Calliope, or the other Muses. I hear these days Calli's tight with Adam Lambert, you should give her a call.
Cook sits on the edge of the sofa, puts a hand on the Muse's hip. "I'll always love you," he tells his Muse, his beloved. "I'm sorry I don't show it as much as I used to, but I'm yours, forever, and no one else's."
Then you can show me now, the Muse says, softly, and raises his all-inspiring arms to Cook's at last.

Spaceship [PG]
Date: 2010-01-20 04:01 pm (UTC)There's a reason why Logan doesn't fly the fucking Blackbird, and it's because he's not the best at it. It kinda galls him to admit, because in most other things, he's the best at what he does. But 'Ro or Scott does the flying, he belts down and does the throwing up.
So when he's in charge of the goddamn Starjammers' eject pod, he curses and swears as he tries his level best to keep her nose up and her saucer aligned. C'mon, One-Eye does it, it can't be that hard.
Ten seconds later he's ploughed into Griffith Park, and his skin's on fire. Terrific. That's what the healing factor's for.
Hatch up: hero time.
Fortunately, he doesn't seem to have run over any civilians with his spaceship; there's some distant screamin', nothing that gives his enhanced hearing any trouble.
Seems he's wrecked someone's picnic, though. In front of him, in the mass of ruined food and picnic mat, is a teenager in a rather loud plaid shirt, whose scent he recognizes instantly from the Idols concert last summer. Thank God Marie isn't here to fangirl over them this time.
"It's you! Again!" squeaks Teen Idol. David something - this is the kid the rocker dude loves.
Logan reaches out a hand and helps the kid to his feet. He realizes the back of his costume is still flaming; he pats it out, then smiles in what he hopes is a reassuring manner.
"Yeah. We should stop meetin' like this."
"I'll say," the kid says, with something that sounds like sarcasm. What d'you know, cub has some teeth. Logan likes teeth.
"Lissen, I'm sorry I ran over your picnic. Can I help with anything?"
"No," David says, with dignity. "I'm just gonna go take my date somewhere else, that's all. It's fine. I bet you were busy saving the world, or something."
Logan shrugs. "Somethin' like that. You still dating that rocker dude?"
"Eleven months today!" the kid grins, and Logan feels his hard heart shift, uneasily, under his uniform.
"Y'know, I told him you were interested, that he should make a move, if he was," Logan says, and he's clearly losing it, making confessionals like this to the civilians rather than making tracks like any sensible superhero.
The kid's mouth falls open, and then he's flung his arms around Logan, and, goddamn it, this is why sensible superheroes don't try to play matchmaker, it's cause of shit like this.
David's arms are very warm, though, and when he murmurs, "Thank you," into Logan's cheek, Logan can't help the huge grin that nearly eats his face.
The kid's cute. He gets what makes Marie fangirl him. He is so clearly losing it.

Interlude [PG]
Date: 2010-01-20 03:22 pm (UTC)Finally, he reaches the tents with the Anthem's red sigils. Their band of mercenaries can afford to have charms of protection sung into their oilskins, but even so, they adhere to a strict watch roster; Davor believes it keeps them sharp, keeps their skills whetted. It's a cold night on the plains, and Celtic Skib is on watch outside, huddled in his skins over a bowl of stew, shortbow at his heel.
"You took your time," Skib says, without looking up from his bowl. He has a touch of the fey which comes from his Celtic blood, can sense a man at fifty paces. "You hungry? The boy went into the town this morning, so there's local meat."
"I've eaten," Tiemann says, and the image of Archuleta's dark head bent over the plateful of simple market fare rises unbidden in his mind, together with the rush of quick blood to his face.
Skib looks up at this, his eyes narrowing. "So it would seem," he says. "Whom did you meet in the lacing parlor, Tiemann? You have new inkspell, and there is something else as well."
Tiemann raises a hand, the new tattoos on his knuckles catching the firelight. "Leave off your faery folklore; I don't wish to discuss it."
"Dave will want to discuss it," Skib warns, as Tiemann pushes past him into the tents.
Their redheaded Gaelic leader is lounging in his chair, playing a game of dice with young Kyle, their long-haired page, by candlelight. Andersson the axeman is sprawled on his front, leg propped out stiffly before him - he's having the wound he'd taken during their last campaign seen to by their camp physician.
"You're back," Davor says, and Tiemann makes his way to Andersson's side. He's concerned about the Norman; his leg wound keeps re-opening with all the recent travelling they have had to do.
"How is it today?" Tiemann asks their physician. Melua's frowning in concentration as she puts her singing bowl down, muttering to herself in her mother tongue. Tiemann's facility with languages is excellent, but it doesn't extend to that of the Kingdom of Goryeo.
"It would be better if you all didn't insist on bloody riding everywhere at all hours," she says finally, in Saxon, though it's without force, and starts to wrap Andersson back up. Tiemann knows how she worries about them, and the affection and respect is mutual: for instance, if Dave as much as looked at her with his usual amorous intent, Tiemann would stab him unquestioningly.
"I met a talented artisan in the town," Tiemann says, casually, dropping the skins from around his shoulders and exposing his new charm to the light. "You should consider an appropriate ward, Andersson, I believe it will assist."
"I am having no inkspell, and that is final," groans Andersson. Melua lifts her own candle and examines Tiemann's new Gallic rose of lys tattoo very carefully.
"Tiemann, this is really excellent. Powerful," she mutters, and across the tent, Davor raises his head.
"That sounds interesting. Tell me more about this artisan."
His touch is light, and fire, rain on a parade. His eyes are like one thing in this life that's true, a breath that only I can breathe.
Tiemann avoids the gaze of his oldest friend. "Tomorrow," he says, and makes his way to his sleeping rugs.
He falls asleep to the sound of Archuleta's luminous voice, singing his spells into Tiemann's skin, into Tiemann's heart.

I totally see the first verse as Archie's and the second verse as Cook's and.......yeah. Anyway. Could be set in AIRN verse or not. Whatever works for me if you feel like writing it. ♥

Date: 2010-01-21 12:48 pm (UTC)A couple of weeks ago I went back and re-read AIRN from start to finish for the first time. I hadn't been able to do that until then because reading it chapter by chapter as you posted it pretty much broke me. But, reading it all the way through gave me such an appreciation for the story as a whole. The images were so much clearer to me and I felt their pain even more. But it was a glorious experience. :)
I love that you wrote this from Archie's POV. Archie crying on Brooke's bed and her holding him showed his hurt and vulnerability and I was right there with him. :(
And Archie was watching Cook's performances - oh my heart - and saw his Avalanche dedication. Oh Gosh. *wibbles*
And then Cook's crying in the hazy Spanish evening, and Arch is crying too, in the afternoon in L.A., miles and oceans away.
Archie lies awake all night.
Finally, when it's morning, he picks up the phone, and dials Cook's cell.
It rings twice, three times. Then Cook's voice, rich and still so beautiful, and, and Archie can't say anything, can't get his throat to work -
- Cook says, "David, is that you?" -
- And Archie can't. Oh, it still hurts so much - he hangs up, he folds to the floor, he cries for everything they've lost, that they can't even talk to each other on the 'phone now, or, most like, ever again.
Just remembering Cook's reaction after Archie hung up and finally knowing what happened from Archie's POV makes me ache. Literally. My heart is constricting and my stomach is in knots.
But, being the genius that you are, you make it all better with that lovely picture of them in the future. YOU ARE AMAZING AND I CANNOT STATE THAT ENOUGH. Thank you so very much for this gem. I absolutely love it. ♥
