Avalanche, You Can

Show me that good things come to those who wait/I feel alive beside you and all at once I am whole again

Chapter One: In This Rush We Are Crushed

Chapter Two: Tell Me I Won’t Be Alone

Archie’s surprised when he gets off the plane and Cook’s there by himself waiting for him in the arrivals hall, no handlers or anything, wearing these cool aviator shades, jeans and a slightly ratty grey hoodie, which Cook had previously explained was his “incognito” look, whatever.

Of course, Arch would have brought his own people, except that his dad was out of town, and his manager was kind of not speaking to him because he’d insisted that morning on dropping everything for a couple of days to go see Cook play in Ohio.

He had Robin, this one security guy which 19E had told him he needed to travel with, but apart from him, and that one very sweet and motherly stewardess in first class, nobody had approached or stopped him on the plane or in the airport corridors, and he was feeling pretty good about the incognito travelling thing, himself, and could kind of pretend that Robin was just a friend that happened to carry his bag and, um, have protecting him from excitable teenage girls in his job description.

“Gee, Cook, you didn’t have to come get me yourself!”

“What, when I practically begged you on my knees to come out here to see me?” Cook's looking kind of tired, actually, and there are lines on his face under the stubble that Archie doesn’t remember from a couple of weeks ago, and the healthy tan on his skin he'd gotten from the Manila sun seems to have faded, and he looks pale enough to blend into the walls. “C’mere,” he says, and grabs Archie in a fierce one-armed hug.

Robin rolls his eyes; he'd been with them in Manila and he's used to Cook’s handsy ways.

Arch hugs back, and, really, it’s silly he’s so excited to see Cook, because he just spent a whole week with him last month, it’s not like they haven’t seen each other in like a year or something. Although, um, it kind of feels like it's been a year. Or something.

He’s of course hoping Cook won’t ask him how come he'd happened to be surfing the ‘net last night looking for stuff on Cook’s tour performances, because that’s something he’s actually been doing, every night since Manila. Not sure if Cook will understand; he guesses it could come off a bit creepy or something, as if Archie is some crazy teenage fan (come to think of it, though, of course, Archie is actually kind of a teenage fan for Cook, because, Cook's album? All kinds of awesome).

So of course, once they’re done with the airport admin things and are safe in the back seat of Cook’s limo, Robin in the front with Cook’s driver, and they're on their way to some nice restaurant for lunch downtown, this is exactly what Cook asks him. “Hey, how did you read about my little concert mishap, anyway? You checking up on me, Archuleta?”

Arch figures that he should have been more prepared for this question, especially since he’d anticipated it, but he's so not; so he stammers something, he’s not sure what exactly, then stammers something else, and after a while Cook takes off his shades and fixes him with that trademark intense Cook stare, and --

-- “Gosh, you look terrible,” says Archie, before he can stop himself, but really, Cook does look pretty terrible. Red-rimmed eyes, everything, gosh.

Cook stares at him for a beat, and then throws back his head and bursts out laughing. And it’s the sweetest sound.

“Oh my gosh, I so did not say that!” says Archie, but Cook has put his arm around Arch’s neck and pulled him in close to his side in a one-armed headlock, still laughing; “Honestly, Archuleta, you are such a charmer.”

Archie uses the close-up to inspect the rest of Cook’s face, and isn’t particularly happy with what he sees. “Cook, I'm not just messing with you. I think you’re, you know, pushing too hard or something. Just look at you,” he says, and pokes him in the arm a little.

Cook looks down at him in a strange sidelong way, with his tired eyes kind of all scrunchy, and then looks away and lets him go, running a hand through his hair, which looks like it’s gotten even more gold in it from the hot tropical sun.

“So,” he says, finally, “it is beyond cool that you dropped everything and came out to see me because I asked, and because you were worried about me. I, I really appreciate it, you know.”

Archie smiles a little uncertainly because he can’t tell if Cook is making fun at first, but then Cook takes his hand and squeezes it, and then Cook turns to stare out of the car window with the wry face that he makes when he’s trying not to cry, and Arch doesn’t know what to do, so he squeezes back as hard as he can, because, gosh, Cook looking tired and on edge like this and about to cry just from seeing him is doing the strangest thing to his heart.

Finally, Cook turns back to him with too-bright eyes and that crooked half-smile that he knows and loves so much. “I mean it, Archie. Thanks for coming. You always get me on my feet again.”

“Um, no problem?” says Archie, and Cook doesn't let go this time, and they ride the rest of the way to their lunch venue hand in hand.

OH MY GOSH HOLDING HANDS!!!!!!!!!11111

I - SHOOT. IDEK HOW I'M SUPPOSED TO BE COHERENT RIGHT NOW, THE BOYS. THEY ARE SO LOVELY. WHAT. i love archie blurting out exactly what he's thinking, and oh, idk, it could happen a million times but him cracking cook up will NEVER GET OLD, OH, BOYS. i love the affection between them - it comes across so well! and i love that cook is wearing his heart on his sleeve, and that archie can see right through him, and that everyone around them is used to their touchy-feely love, and the pacing of this, guh, perfection!

i cannot wait for the next installment! BOYS YOU NEED TO HOOK UP ALREADY.

Oh, sweetie, such a kind comment, and I made you capslock even? I just wanted to get Archie's perspective in, and give a shout out to the Cook aviators of awesome hotness ;) Glad the pacing worked for you, and the touchyfeeliness wasn't overdone! (Because, um, THERE'S MORE, LATER, ahaha.)

So, interlude, then the show. ;)

Uhm, what can I say? I love your fluff, even if this was mostly angsty, when poor Cook doesn't know what to say and he is about to cry and Archie wants to comfort him and doesn't know how and it's all so sad because they're obviously so in love and how can Cook not see it when Archie has practically left everything and has disobeyed his manager and probably his father is going to be really mad at him for dropping everything and travelling to Ohia just to hang out with Cook because seriously, how more obvious could they get?

Sorry about the pointless rambling, and the lack of periods. I get wild when I love something!

Date: 2009-05-22 08:35 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jehane-writes.livejournal.com
Aww, hon, getting wild because of love? Too sweet! ♥!!! You can ramble anytime ;)

Maybe I overly angstified, because I was trying not to overfluff! Don't worry; Cook is just kind of hung over from the emo and overindulgence in alcohol etc, so he's primed for the crying anyway. Archie is just kind of going with the handholding flow.

Unabashed fluff coming next...;)

Yes, that happens sometimes.

It's okay. Angsty is good (you know, angst is ALWAYS good for me), and I kinda understand that Cook is a crier, so it's normal for him to be over-emotive.

How many parts are there going to be? I want to know for how long I have this amazing story before I despair about it ending!

You're too sweet! ;)

I am planning one big climatic part, up next, and then an epilogue, but I have a single-shot prequel as well. So, all in, maybe 3 more parts.

And, you and your BOUH brain can help me with this, bb. From the next part:

Instead of going shopping, though, they spend the afternoon hanging out with the guys in the band, who welcome Archie’s unexpected arrival into their midst as if they hadn't seen him for a year, as well: Joey tackles him to the ground, and Archie puts his head on Kyle's shoulder and noodles on Andy's guitar, and Cook can't stop smiling and smiling like a sap.

Is the above IC? Is Joey the hugger, or should I make it someone else? Neal shows up in the next para, but I think I've got him ;)

JSYK, am writing all the BOUH stuff in this fic with you in mind ;)

Me? I only speak the truth.

Aww, only three? *pouts* I may demand a sequel to this, you know.

And well, Joey can be the hugger, but we know he's more like the goofy guy in the band, Kyle is the tiny, cuddling type (you have that right). I'd say Andy is more likely to tackle Archie to the ground.

As long as Neal is a tough rocker with a soft heart, you have him right.

Awww, you're so sweet!

Okay, Andy gets to tackle, then. Heeee, such fun! Love the BOUH.

Thanks for your help, bb! ♥!

Very enjoyable. Your writing muse seems to be in overdrive at the moment which is great. Just 1 request could you link your chapters so it will be easier to reread the whole. Don't ask me how because I haven't a clue but hopefully you will at some stage cause I don't want to lose track of this.

God I'm such an idiot. I just realised I can find all your links on your journal page so forget what I just said. My only excuse is that I am such an amateur at all web stuff. Bangs head repeatedly on desk!!

Um, I was actually gonna link internally, which I have recently learned how to do. So, no need to *headdesk* at all! Thanks for reading - glad you're along for the ride~!

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
What a vivid and warm picture you paint, my dear!!!
*flails*
Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous!!!

The dynamic here is just amazing and I can actually feel Archie's worry and Cook's weariness.

Wonderful and amazing, as always!!! ♥!

Cannot wait for more!

Baby, as always, you're too kind! I wasn't sure that this chapter was particularly flail-worthy, but we needed to get in Archie's POV, and how Cook is with him, in contrast with dissociated Cook in Chapter One - and as always you give me such confidence!

So glad the dynamic is working for you!

And, um, there IS in fact more, so! Just to mix things up, I might post the prequel first, if I can get it unstuck over the weekend ;)

Oh, it's WONDERFUL...

Full of cute funny bits like,

"Not sure if Cook will understand; he guesses it could come off a bit creepy or something, as if Archie is some crazy teenage fan (come to think of it, though, of course, Archie is actually kind of a teenage fan for Cook, because, Cook's album? All kinds of awesome)."

And sweet angst like,

"...and then Cook turns to stare out of the car window with the wry face that he makes when he’s trying not to cry..."

And then the subtle REAL subtext romanticism of THIS,

"David doesn’t know what to do, so he squeezes back as hard as he can, because, gosh, Cook looking tired and on edge like this and about to cry just from seeing him is doing the strangest thing to his heart."

You are killing me here, and making me love it:-)

Jehane, you must NEVER stop writing, you are so gosh darned good at it!

OK, back to wrestling with 14.

*Mwah!*

Babe, what a sweet and thoughtful comment this was!

I was actually a bit surprised at the expressions of love for this part, which was designed to get Archie in there, establish Cook's frame of mind and essentially set up for next part's climatic scene. (This was where I was stuck for a while, until I envisaged the hand holding in the car.) But I'm beyond glad you think it came across naturally and nicely, and wasn't overly mushy ;)

Hope 14 is going well, bb! xx

I was so very pleased to see the continuation of this story, and that Part 2 was up. It's as though when Archie enters the picture, the universe slides back into balance, and things are back to where they belong.

I love that Cook was so impatient to see his Archie, that he needed to make a personal appearance at the airport "incognito". Hee. And Robin's eye-rolling cracked me up. And when they were in the limo, it was like Let the Healing Begin.

I love the flow of your words, and feel as though you've really gotten the characters down pat. I am so very much looking forward to the appearance of BoUH. That should be fun, and heart-warming, at the same time. Thanks so much for sharing. It's truly appreciated. :)

And I was so pleased to see your comment, because you left such a thoughtful one on the last fic! Thank you!

Yes, I thought the incognito and aviators should make an appearance together at the airport, hee. And I got quite fond of Robin, whom I added to the fic when I was't sure folks would let an 18 year old popstar fly off to Ohio alone, nevermind how keen he is to see his boyfriend ;).

yep, BoUH's up next. I am having lots of fun writing them, though I had to consult Lire about some IC issues I was having. Hope you enjoy their cameos, bb!

You got me at the aviators.

"David uses the close-up to inspect the rest of Cook’s face, and isn’t particularly happy with what he sees."

Archie is such a caring boyfriend. *sighs* I know.

Looking forward to more, bb! Thanks for sharing!
